"Our program is not only for those seeking to look and feel better, but for those who want to perform better in all aspects of life," says Frank Pucher, who opened the center with his wife, Francesca, in 1994. The couple, who live in Roseland, help a wide range of clients, from the competitive athlete to a healthy, middle-aged mom who's never stepped a sneakered foot in a gym to an 80-yearold stroke patient. However, Frank says, "What distinguishes us from most gyms is that we really cater to those who need fitness training the most." Although men and women come to Fitness 121 for a powerful workout, the focus is to help clients build positive energy for a healthy lifestyle. Trainers here work with people individually, developing custom regimens to improve their qual- A ity of life, encompassing exercise and health issues such as knee, back, and hip pain, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol. Fitness 121 trainers approach clients with understanding, motivational techniques, and deep knowledge of the correct approach to exercise; they don't push fast weight loss or a "no pain, no gain" workout. " e bulk of our clients don't come to us for the sole purpose of looking good for bathing suit season," Pucher says. " ey come because they realize they've hit a point in their lives where they need to start taking better care of themselves." Some clients may be seeing their energy levels drop, not performing as they once did in their family, work, or social life. e center fills that gap by providing motivation, teaching people how exercise and fitness can improve their quality of life. Other clients come through physician referral, including those seeking programs for arthritis, hypertension, stress management, and osteoporosis. But whether the clients are young or old, healthy or suffering with arthritis, at Fitness 121 they'll find warm and knowledgeable staff ready and able to help them feel and be better, Pucher says. "What sets us apart is our approach to fitness and how we train people," he adds with passion. "We don't use a lot of machinery because most machines encourage people to be stationary. After sitting at a desk for 7 or 8 hours a day, you don't need to drive to the gym to sit down again." e most important visit to Fitness 121 is the initial one, where clients receive a fitness evaluation assessing their medical history, exercise background, and fitness goals. Strength, movement, and range of motion tests are also administered. Next, a trainer develops a custom program that establishes goals and limitations and targets problem areas. e center's seven fitness professionals are all certified in exercise science or other specialties. In addition to customized training sessions, clients are welcome to use the facility on their off days at no additional cost. Pucher says Fitness 121 is the right antidote for everyone, particularly as stress and difficult times have taken a toll on our well-being. "What we're trying to do is create an atmosphere that is infectious," he says. "Our goal is to be the best part of our client's day…every day."
